What We Do... |
|
 |
The Malaysian Nature Society (MNS)
is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of
nature appreciation and conservation in Malaysia. Established
in 1940, MNS is the oldest scientific and non-governmental
organisation in the country. |

Our Philosophy |
| |
The philosophy of MNS is to get Malaysians
and other residents involved in, exposed to and informed about nature
and healthy outdoor pursuits through various activities. These include
field trips, field courses, outdoor experiences, children's education
programmes, publications, exhibitions, talks, lectures, seminars
and symposiums.
We hope to be able to instill appreciation and care for Malaysia's
splendid natural heritage that people may realise that there is
a great need for a sustainable management and conservation of nature
and natural resources of Malaysia for future generations.
We are increasingly made aware of the damages to the global environment.
This concern has been raised and highlighted by many scientists
and publicised by numerous environmental organisations throughout
the world. MNS believes that this global awareness and concern for
the environment augurs well, not just for the environment, but for
the global community as well. |

Our Achievements |
| |
From humble beginnings, the Society
has bloomed into a mature organisation. Apart from its role in conservation
of nature and the environment, MNS has also been active in scientific
research.
In 1985-86 and 1989, MNS launched two highly successful scientific
expeditions to the Endau-Rompin Rainforest. More recently, a similar
expedition was held in the Belum Rainforest. These expeditions led
to many new and interesting scientific discoveries but also led
to a greater awareness of the public as to the importance of conserving
these areas.
As a result, MNS was able to convince the state governments of Pahang
and Johor to set aside 98,000 ha of the Endau-Rompin forest as a
national park.
In 1991, a year after the Society's 50th anniversary , MNS was presented
with the Global 500 award by the UNEP in recognition for the Society's
contribution towards the protection of the environment. Through
the dedication of its members, MNS plans to carry on with its work
to promote the enjoyment and protection of the Malaysian Natural
Heritage. |

Your Support |
| |
The society realises that it cannot
work on its own. We need support from each of you, for the state
of the environment concerns all of us. We now have 5000 members
but we need to continue to grow to become a really strong and effective
voice.
We are currently in almost every state in the country and it has
been noted that all states are equally active in all their initiatives.
We encourage you to come and join us in our many activities to ensure
that our children inherit this beautiful earth that we now live
in. |
